2023 Year in Review: 52 Highlights

One of my favorite year end activities is posting our Year in Review. We love looking back on all of our adventures from the previous year and giving thanks for the blessing of travel. We also like looking at some of our “trends”; this year was filled with many cool spots throughout New England (heavy emphasis on Vermont and New Hampshire) and the greater Northeast (Maryland and Virginia, and our favorite: New York) and lots of cool resorts.

If you’d like to take a trip down memory lane, here are our Year in Reviews from 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, and 2017.

For all of my local Connecticut readers, there is a SUPER fun, SUPER tasty event coming to Fairfield on October 8th: The Taste of Fairfield. Sponsored by Fairfield Magazine, the Taste of Fairfield will bring together over two dozen local restaurants and a variety of food trucks at the Delamar Hotel in Southport.  Fairfield, Connecticut, and the surrounding towns, has a vibrant restaurant scene, and many local hot spots will offer samples of their signature dishes and drinks. This year, they’ve added “Food Truck Alley” to the event, which kicks off Fairfield Restaurant Week.

Food Trail #1: Cupcake Trail in Coastal Southwestern Connecticut

We are so excited to share the first in a new series for Coast2CoastwithKids: Food Trails. A couple of years ago, we found this great list of ice cream shoppes located in the greater Mystic, Connecticut area. It inspired us to research similar types of themed “tours” through Connecticut; we’ve seen these ideas when researching cities to visit and we wanted to create our own mini versions.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, and the rise in cases, we have been staying close to home, and mainly outdoors, which has allowed us the time to try hiking (here and here). We think these food trail will be a great way to spend an afternoon (or full day) as a family, try new foods (or new flavors of old favorites), and support local businesses. First up, we’re sharing 8 places to enjoy cupcakes from Norwalk to Fairfield (lower Fairfield County), where all items are homemade daily on premises.

Regular readers will recall my passionate enthusiasm for the National Park Service. A quick search on my blog and you will find dozens of sites we have visited- check them out here. Whenever we travel or visit  a new area, I always check for any nearby site- the Park Service has an app and website for searching sites. On a recent trip to lower Manhattan to explore the Fraunces Tavern Museum and National Museum of the American Indian, we realized we were less than a half mile from Federal Hall National Memorial and decided to visit.

My children are OBSESSED with reading (good problem to have, I know). They can’t get enough of books. Exactly one year ago, we were in New York City to see a Broadway play for my daughter’s birthday. We were exploring Bryant Park and saw the New York City Library. We had an hour before the show and it was too cold to “walk around the city” so we decided to check out the library. We ended up spending most of our time in the children’s room, but I made note of the tour group that passed us and vowed to return. We did, exactly one year later.

The Stephen A. Schwarzman Building of the New York City Library opened in 1911 and probably the most well known of the 92 properties in the library system. It’s one of four research centers, in addition to the 88 circulation branches located throughout Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island. Some areas of the library are open to the general public and some are reserved for credentialed people who visit to complete research. The library offers audio tour for a nominal fee at any time the library is open, but also offers free, guided tours tour twice a day. Check in at the docent desk in Astor Hall. Make sure you check times and get there early, as tour spaces are limited.

10 Things to Do at the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath, Maine

The state of Maine holds the record for building the most ships in the country and Bath, located a half hour north of Portland and just over a half hour south of Augusta, has built more ships than any other area in Maine since the 1740s. It is fitting, then, that Bath is home to the Maine Maritime Museum, which showcases the history of the ship building, boating, fishing, and lobstering industries. The complex is spread over 20 acres on the banks of the Kennebec River, one mile away from Bath Iron Works.
