Year in Review: 35 Highlights of 2020

| | | | | | | | | |

2020 may have not been the year everyone was expecting, but we were fortunate enough to still have a lot of fun and explore a lot of very cool places. While we stuck closer to home, mainly the Tri State area and New England, we racked up 12,000 miles on our Equinox (and that’s with only driving 200 miles in 3.5 months!) and visited a lot of spots that have been on our bucket list for a while. (Read more about our just-summer bucket list here).

A note about traveling during a still present pandemic:  We took every precaution we could. We chose to visit places where we could spend the majority of our time outdoors. We chose to do activities on “off peak” hours or days. We kept to ourselves and socially distanced ourselves from other groups. We stayed masked the whole time we were indoors or when we were near others outdoors. And when we returned from a trip out of state, we stayed home for at least 10 days before venturing out again. We have rarely socialized in person with anyone since the pandemic started. We made the best choices possible with the information we had and we’re grateful for the experiences, and time, together. We know how fortunate we are to be able to have had these experiences and we’re truly grateful for all the people in our world who serve, defend, protect, and keep us all safe and healthy.

New York Public Library, New York City

My children are OBSESSED with reading (good problem to have, I know). They can’t get enough of books. Exactly one year ago, we were in New York City to see a Broadway play for my daughter’s birthday. We were exploring Bryant Park and saw the New York City Library. We had an hour before the show and it was too cold to “walk around the city” so we decided to check out the library. We ended up spending most of our time in the children’s room, but I made note of the tour group that passed us and vowed to return. We did, exactly one year later.

The Stephen A. Schwarzman Building of the New York City Library opened in 1911 and probably the most well known of the 92 properties in the library system. It’s one of four research centers, in addition to the 88 circulation branches located throughout Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island. Some areas of the library are open to the general public and some are reserved for credentialed people who visit to complete research. The library offers audio tour for a nominal fee at any time the library is open, but also offers free, guided tours tour twice a day. Check in at the docent desk in Astor Hall. Make sure you check times and get there early, as tour spaces are limited.

    Samoset Resort in Rockport, Maine

Rockport, Maine’s Samoset Resort, known for its stunning views of Penobscot Bay and Camden Hills, award winning 18 hole golf course, and first class service, has been welcoming guests from around the world since 1889. Over the past 130 years, the resort has expanded and renovated many times to include additional hotel suites, meeting and convention spaces, timeshare condominiums, and amenities such as recreational sports, a spa, and several dining options.

While the resort is most popular in the warmer months, there is still plenty to do during the winter. Check here for information about the popular Glacier Ice Bar Lounge that is created each winter and other popular winter activities. We chose to visit Samoset recently because we knew the resort would have plenty of outdoor activities and plenty of family fun. Samoset more than delivered and we highly recommend a visit.

City Guide: 10 Family Friendly Activities in Brooklyn, NY to Enjoy this Winter

While our family frequently enjoys attractions, museums, and performances in Manhattan, we’ve never ventured across the bridge to the borough of Brooklyn. This past month, we had the opportunity to spend the weekend exploring many cultural attractions in Brooklyn and learning about the city’s rich history.

    Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut

Frequently awarded a top aquarium in New England by Trip Advisor and visited by over 700,000 people in 2017, Mystic Aquarium is a “must see” if you’re visiting the southeastern part of Connecticut. On a recent spring break trip, my family stopped for the afternoon and got up close and personal with all sorts of creatures!

Conveniently located right next to Interstate 95, it’s easy to get to with ample free parking. The aquarium is open all year, with plenty of exhibits both indoors as well as outdoors so the weather shouldn’t have too much impact on your visit. In addition to the permanent exhibits, the aquarium hosts a variety of special, seasonal events.

    Holiday Gift Guide 2022

The “gift of time” has always been one of my favorite phrases and one of my life mantras; I believe that spending time with someone is the greatest gift. I’ve been on a mission recently to pare down our possessions (aka get.rid.of.all.the.things) and have really adopted the “less is more” mentality.

I truly believe that the one of the greatest gifts we can give someone is to spend time with them.  It is in this spirit that I am (again) sharing a “gift guide” of sorts with ideas that inspire time together. We also think many of these ideas support local and small businesses, which is always a priority for us.

10 National Park Sites to Go on a Virtual Tour While Staying Home

have been toying with the idea of posting content related to the current climate of staying home during the COVID 19 pandemic since the crisis started last month. My focus of this blog has always been family focused, education fun and traveling throughout the United States. I thought about posts regarding things to keep kids busy, new skills kids can learn, favorite family board games and books (I might still share that post), and how to avoid boredom. But those posts didn’t seem that original or enlightening. So we’re sticking with what we know best: family travel.
