The Rimrock Resort in Banff, Alberta Canada

| | |

This past summer, we enjoyed a magical week in Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada, including a stay at the Rimrock Resort in the heart of the town of Banff.

I have been reading about Banff for years and it was truly a bucket list spot for us. Banff National Park, Canada’s first National Park, covers over 2500 miles and runs from Lake Louise in the northern part of the park to the town of Banff in the southern part of the park. The town of Banff, with a permanent population of 8,000 people, is the first incorporated municipality within a National Park; the area welcomes over four million visitors each year. There’s tons to see and do- see our complete City Guide here–  and wonderful resorts the whole family will enjoy.

The Rimrock Resort, part of the Accor brand of world class properties, is a beautiful resort located just outside the hustle and bustle of downtown Banff. The resort has well appointed rooms, delicious options for in house dining, and tons of friendly staff and daily activities that take advantage of all that Banff has to offer. The Rimrock is very family friendly and includes amenities kids will love like an indoor pool, children’s menus at several restaurants, and daily kid friendly activities.

Seven Reasons to Love The Rimrock Resort:

  1. Location: The Rimrock Resort is located just a five minute drive (or a two mile walk on a marked path) down the mountain to the center of town, and directly across the street from the Banff Upper Hot Springs. The Banff Gondola is a quarter mile drive from the resort, but you’re better off walking, or taking the ROAM bus from the stop at The Rimrock, during peak summer months. There is also a two mile hiking, and horse, trail from the Rimrock to the Fairmont Banff Springs hotel property.  Note: There is a nightly parking fee (both self parking and valet, and indoor garage, electric vehicle plugins, and  outdoor parking options available) charged to guests’ accounts.

  1. Accommodations: The Rimrock has over 300 guest rooms and suites spread out across eight floors, ranging in size from traditional rooms with queen or king size beds to one bedroom, 600 square foot suites, all of which overlook either Sulphur Mountain or Mount Rundle and Tunnel Mountain. Rooms are handicap accessible and some room types even allow pets. We stayed in a spacious, traditional room overlooking Sulphur Mountain and loved the decor and high end finishes in the room and bathroom. The resort also offers cribs and strollers, as well as hiking equipment and E-bikes to loan to guests. Note: The Rimrock does offer a AAA/CAA discount for many dates and room types- ask when you book!

    1. Primrose is the main restaurant of the Rimrock, located on the 6th floor with views of Tunnel Mountain and Mount Rundle, offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus, and a special Wine and Pasta Night on Wednesdays.
    2. Larkspur is located in the main lobby of the Rimrock, offering beautiful views of Mount Rundle, both lunch and dinner menus, a daily Happy Hour (3pm-5pm), and plenty of options for children. There are indoor, fireside, and outdoor, balcony seating options.
    3. Rimrock Café is the spot for grab and go sandwiches, pastries, drinks, snacks, and sweet treats. The cafe opens early at 6:30am every day.
    4. Eden is the most upscale option at the Rimrock, offering both a four course and seven course dinner with wine pairing Thursday through Sunday. Not the best option for children.

  1. Daily activities: One of the things that most impressed us about The Rimrock Resort was the Concierge team. The staff was incredibly knowledgeable about the area, offered great advice, and provided a wide range of activities for each season. When we visited in the summer, the resort was offering tickets to cruises on local lakes, white water rafting, and even helicopter tours. In the winter the resort opens an on site ice skating rink and snow tubing hill. There are also seasonal hiking tours, wildlife tours, and plenty of seasonal sporting options. The Concierge team is very knowledgeable about hiking and biking in the area- we received great advice on some of our planned hikes and additional look out spots to enjoy the views of the mountain ranges. Check here for seasonal guides.

Exploring the John Michael Kohler Arts Center and Art Preserve in Kohler, WI

On our recent holiday trip to Kohler, Wisconsin, we had the opportunity to explore many popular sites in the village, as well as attractions in the adjacent city of Sheboygan. One of the most well known museums in Sheboygan is the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, a 100,000 square foot complex that includes eight galleries showcasing contemporary art, a hands on art studio open to the public, performance spaces, and an established Arts/Industry residency program. The JMK Center hosts many concerts, performances, workshops and camps, and special events throughout the year- see the full calendar here.

  • Mark Twain House & Museum in Hartford, Connecticut

Sometimes, we travel out of state so much, my family forgets to visit all of the great spots right in our own “backyard.” With that in mind, we decided to check out a popular spot in Hartford: The Mark Twain House & Museum. For our tips on visiting the nearby Connecticut Science Center, read our post here.

American author Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, moved around the country, but spent 17 years raising his three daughters in the Nook Farm neighborhood of Hartford. The late 1800s was a time when Hartford was a thriving industrial city and Nook Farm was one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in the city. Fellow author Harriet Beecher Stowe lived next door (and penned Uncle Tom’s Cabin 20 years before Twain came to town). During the family’s time in Hartford, Clemens wrote dozens of his most popular novels and stories including The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court.

10 Ways to Explore the Florence Griswold Museum in Lyme, Connecticut

We enjoy visiting art museums with our children. Some people may think art museums are not an ideal spot to bring children, but there are a whole variety of reasons why you should- read them in this post. We’ve recently been researching local museums in Connecticut and were pleased to see that the Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme is open and taking very good steps to honor pandemic restrictions and keep everyone safe and healthy.

Home to military sea captain Robert Griswold and his family in the middle 1800s until Florence Griswold’s death in 1937, the 12 acre estate includes art galleries, the main mansion, three additional structures with exhibits, an artist trail, gift shop, and seasonal cafe. The Griswold family harvested a large collection of gardens, producing much of the food the family ate, and later served to guests. Griswold inherited the home from her family and began welcoming boarders in 1899 as a way of making money. Up to 18 artists, who became known as the Lyme Art Colony, would stay in the home at one time,. Famous guests include President Woodrow Wilson and his first wife, an aspiring artist. Old Lyme became known as one of the biggest Impressionist art colonies in America, in large part to the Griswold campus. Today, it is open to visitors and welcomes families to explore what life was like for the artists in the early 20th century.

    Highlights of 2017

My 2017 was filled with lots of fun travels. My family and I stayed mainly in New England, but we still managed to cover over 5,000 miles from northern Maine to New York City, and many places in between. For all of my new readers and followers, I thought I would highlight some of my favorite places and my most liked (and shared) posts from 2017:

The Titanic Museum in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee

Most people know of the Titanic disaster from the popular 1998 film by James Cameron starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. But how much do you really know about the ship that was the length of 4 city blocks took 15,000 people two years to build, and less than three hours to sink in the early morning hours of April 14, 1912, with only 712 of the 2208 passengers and crew members surviving?

On a recent visit to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, we spent the morning exploring the Titanic Museum, located right on Route 441 in the heart of all the action (and less than a half hour from an entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Read about our adventures in the park here). The other Titanic Museum in America is located in Branson, Missouri.

  1. The Rimrock Resort looks incredible! The views, cozy rooms, and spa sound perfect for a Banff getaway. Definitely adding this to my list—thanks for sharing!

  2. The Rimrock resort looks lovely! We seem to stay somewhere different each time we visit Banff, but we have never stayed in that area – the walk to reach it looks lovely! It’s nice that they have decent dining options if you fancy staying close after a long day adventuring too.
