Celebrating the Holidays at the Gaylord National Resort in National Harbor, Maryland

| | | | |

Last December, on our travels home during the Christmas holiday, we stopped for one more holiday themed adventure at the Gaylord National Resort in National Harbor, Maryland. The resort complex is massive with plenty of activities the whole family will enjoy, including the popular holiday ICE! experience.

The 41 acre resort and convention center, located on the Potomac River and less than a half hour from downtown Washington DC,  has almost 2,000 rooms and suites, half a dozen full service dining options (many kid friendly!) and several quick service options, a climate controlled indoor garden atrium, a full service spa, and tons of family friendly amenities and activities offered year round.

Travel Tips:

  • The Gaylord National Resort is a Marriott property (our favorite hotel brand!) so Bonvoy members can receive their usual perks and benefits when staying at the resort.
  • Room options include atrium view rooms with balconies (offering great views of the nightly light show and the garden atrium, but no privacy on the balcony and it can get noisy), Christmas themed suites, and quieter Potomac River view suites.
  • The Gaylord National has its own parking garage ($30 per day) attached to the convention center side of the resort and also offers valet parking ($43 per day).
  • A lodging reservation at the Gaylord includes a $27 resort destination fee, which includes access to the fitness center and indoor pool, daily sunrise yoga, transportation on the Harbor Circulator Bus, two welcome drinks at Harbor Social and a cookie from the Potomac District Café and Market, and resort wide internet access.
  • Check here for more packages and special offers that include ICE! and holiday activities and overnight stays at the Gaylord National Resort.

Holiday Activities at the Gaylord Resort:

  • Most activities are located on the Ballroom level in the Maryland and Potomac Ballrooms and Prince George’s Exhibition Hall on the Lobby Level.
  • The activities listed below have separate fees. We suggest purchasing passes that include several activities at reduced rates; some activities do require specific dates and times- see up to date booking information here
  • Note: When we visited in late December 2024, the ICE theme was Charlie Brown and Snoopy. For 2025, the ICE! theme is The Polar Express. Our photos reflect our 2024 visit.

  1. Walk through the 19,000 square foot ICE! exhibit, featuring the story of The Polar Express (2025’s theme) told through 10 engaging exhibits, including a 20 foot slide guests can slide down and a 11 foot Santa. Each scene is carved from almost seven thousand blocks of ice, weighing a total of two million pounds! The indoor exhibit is kept at a cool 9 degrees fahrenheit (guests are given blue winter parkas to wear during the exhibit-definitely borrow one!) See ticket information here. Note: When we visited in 2024, the theme was Charlie Brown and Friends, which is reflected in our photos)
  2. Complete the holiday Mistletoe Mile Scavenger Hunt and earn a holiday keepsake souvenir. Pick up the booklet at Guest Services near Alpine Village.

National Park Guide: Badlands National Park in South Dakota

Badlands National Park, located in Interior South Dakota, is the location of the world’s largest fossil beds. The 244,000 acre park is home to sedimentary rock layers deposited over 70 million years ago, as well as mixed grass prairie where bison, bighorn sheep, prairie dogs, and ferrets live. There are over 60 species of grass throughout the prairies inside the park. Named by the early French trappers and the Lakota Native American tribe that founded the area, the Badlands are known for extremes: extreme weather, extreme vastness of the plains, and extreme fossil beds. Learn more about the formation of the Badlands Buttes. Badlands became a National Monument in 1939 and then a National Park in 1978; the southern half of the park is located on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and is co-managed with the Oglala Sioux Tribe. Over one million people visit Badlands National Park each year

The Auberge Saint Antoine Hotel in Québec

On a recent trip to Québec, we had the wonderful opportunity to stay at the Auberge Saint-Antoine, a Relais and Château property (one of only 450 hotels in the world with the distinct honor). Located in the heart of Old Port of Québec, the Saint Antoine is steeped in history and offers many wonderful amenities. The site was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985, and first opened in 1992 in a 1822 stone warehouse (which is now Chez Muffy’s restaurant). The hotel quickly expanded and moved into the adjacent Hunt House, and then expanded again in 2003 to include 95 uniquely designed rooms and suites, a business center, a fitness center, receptions rooms, an auditorium, and two restaurants.  The Saint Antoine is one of the best hotel we have ever had the privilege of visiting and we highly recommend staying here when exploring Old Québec (and yes, the hotel is SUPER kid friendly!)

32 Places to Eat in Connecticut

Our recent list of 30 Places We Love in Connecticut received some great feedback. We’re glad so many people enjoy (and agreed with) some of our favorite spots. I thought about including some of our favorite places to eat, but decided food needs its own post!

This is by no means a comprehensive list. Our suggestions below are definitely Fairfield and New County heavy, as that’s our home base. If you’re looking for a larger variety, check out this recent list from Connecticut Magazine. I subscribe to Connecticut magazine and always save this annual issue- so many great suggestions. One of my other favorite guides for dining in Connecticut is CTBites.com. They offer weekly newsletters with updates, special events, and holiday menus. 10 Rainy Day Activities in Manhattan Teenagers Will Love

New York City, and specifically Manhattan,  is a magical place any season and in any weather and for any age. But our recent storms in the Northeast inspired a reader to ask us for recommendations for rainy day activities in the Big Apple. And knowing that she has teen-aged kids, we offered suggestions that we thought would be most engaging for that age. This week, we’re sharing those 10 activities that will (in theory) especially appeal to the teenage crowd.

  • Presidential Libraries & Museums

Don’t let the word “library” misguide you. While there are thousands of papers and personal records of the presidents to read, and spaces for scholarly research, there are just as many opportunities to explore, touch, see, listen, and learn about American history at the 13 presidential libraries located throughout the country. (President Obama’s Chicago library and museum is currently under construction.)

Franklin D. Roosevelt was the first to establish a presidential library, followed by each succeeding president, as well as predecessor Herbert Hoover. The National Archives and Records Administration oversee the 13 presidential libraries. I first wrote about presidential libraries for Kidventurous in 2014, but have since visited more libraries and museums and learned lots of new things! At your first stop, be sure to pick up the passport for all 13 libraries so you can collect the stamps.
