Forsyth Nature Center and Park in Kingston New York

| | |

We’ve spent a lot of 2020 taking day trips to the western part of Connecticut and the Hudson Valley and Catskill areas of New York state. We have close friends that live near Utica New York and we recently met them in Kingston, New York. We were looking for an outdoor space and discovered the Forsyth Nature Center- the perfect spot to entertain the kids for a few hours and enjoy the outdoors.

Forsyth Nature Center is part of an 18 acre park that also includes a playground, tennis courts, and open fields. The nature center opened in 1936 and has 24 animal exhibits and a dozen gardens, many of which are sponsored by local civic organizations.

Travel Tips:

  • The Forsyth Nature Center is FREE to explore and open 9am-5pm seven days a week- check here for updates and changes.

  • The Forsyth Nature Center offers a variety of programs, including Bookworms and Junior Naturalist Programs. Check here for more information.

  • There are small parking lots in front of both the playground and the nature center.

  • Bring veggies and fruits like carrots, celery, lettuce, and sliced apples to feed the animals- the goats, alpacas, and cow are NOT shy!

  • There are two portapotties with running water located between the playground and nature center.

  • A covered pavilion includes several picnic tables available to the public. Find information about local dining establishments and take out options here

We'll email this post to you, so you can come back to it later.

Six Things to Do at Forsyth Park:

  1. Swing, slide, and climb all over the playground, which includes tunnels and a medieval theme.

  2. Visit with (and feed!) several native and exotic animals including turtles, birds of prey, goats, alpacas, and a reptile house.

  3. Follow along on the audio tour at the nature center- find the link here. The audio tour includes trivia facts and interesting stories about many of the animals who call the center home. Keep an eye out for placards throughout the nature center that indicate an audio tour stop.

  4. Grab a book from the Little Book Library and read it in one of the gardens or the Burroughs Reading Nook. There are various flower gardens, a vegetable garden, a butterfly garden, and even a hummingbird garden.

  5. Toss a ball or frisbee in the open fields. There is a softball dugout fence installed on one of the fields.

  6. Play tennis on two upper level courts (north of the playground)

    Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut

Frequently awarded a top aquarium in New England by Trip Advisor and visited by over 700,000 people in 2017, Mystic Aquarium is a “must see” if you’re visiting the southeastern part of Connecticut. On a recent spring break trip, my family stopped for the afternoon and got up close and personal with all sorts of creatures!

Conveniently located right next to Interstate 95, it’s easy to get to with ample free parking. The aquarium is open all year, with plenty of exhibits both indoors as well as outdoors so the weather shouldn’t have too much impact on your visit. In addition to the permanent exhibits, the aquarium hosts a variety of special, seasonal events.

Six Ways to Explore Grant’s Farm, St. Louis, Missouri

One of my favorite roads trip our family has taken was a three week trip from Connecticut to Albuquerque, New Mexico. We spent a few days in St Louis, Missouri and one of our highlights was a visit to Grant’s Farm.         Note: this post has been fact checked as of March 2018.

Grant’s Farm was originally owned Julia Grant’s family. After the Civil War, it was purchased by Julia’s husband, Ulysses S. Grant, and then by the Busch family, makers of Anheuser-Busch beers,  in the early 1900s. Located about twenty minutes southwest of of downtown St Louis, it’s open from April through October, with full time hours during the summer months, and limited hours in April, September, and October.  The farm is home to dozens of animals, including elephants, deer, kangaroos, donkeys, goats, buffalo, and the famous Clydesdale horses.

Exploring West Point Military Academy in West Point, New York

Established in 1802, West Point is America’s oldest, continuously occupied military post and home to the United States Military Academy of over 4,000 cadets. Located in the town of West Point in the heart of the Hudson Valley, an hour north of Manhattan and about two hours south of Albany, the site for the campus was chosen for its high ground above a sharp bend of the Hudson River, connecting New York City to the south and all the way north to Canada.

  • Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze in Croton on Hudson, N.Y.

Now in its 13th season, the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze at Van Cortlandt Manor in Croton-on-Hudson, New York has become so popular it’s expanded to forty five nights and welcomes close to 200,000 people each fall. The displays include about 7,000 “constructed” pumpkins which are part of the annual collection and an additional 1,000 “live” pumpkins that are lit each night by thirty volunteers. Overall, it takes almost 3,000 volunteers to run the Blaze each year.

The Blaze is held on the grounds of Van Cortlandt Manor, an estate with parts built in 1749 and originally encompassing 86,000 acres. It’s overseen by the Historic Hudson Valley, which includes four additional properties. We were gifted a family membership to the Historic Hudson Valley and I cannot wait to explore all five locations. My husband and I went to the Blaze before we had children, so I knew how quickly tickets would sell out. I called back in early September, as soon as tickets went on sale. I was happy to see that, while all the weekends are sold out through Halloween, there are some week nights, and weekends in November still available. Check here for ticket sales. Note: Children under the age of three do not need a ticket.
