Tidal Cove at the JW Marriott Turnberry Resort and Spa in Miami

| | | | |

On a recent holiday visit to see family who live in southern Florida (we’ve visited many times- see our West Palm Beach City Guide here), we were looking for a new spot to explore. My brother shared that the JW Marriott Turnberry Resort and Spa always received high praise from people in the area and would be a great fit with our families. We booked an overnight stay at the Turnberry and had a wonderful time!

The Turnberry Resort and Spa is a JW Marriott property, one of the brand’s luxury level resorts, that spans over 300 acres in northern Miami. The property opened in the early 1970s, with extensive renovations and additions in the 1990s, and the acquisition as a JW Marriott property in 2018, including the addition of the Tidal Cove Waterpark. The resort is well known for its championship golf courses and luxury spa, numerous dining options, a private marina with guest boat rentals, and several family friendly amenities and attractions. The Turnberry frequently receives accolades, including Travel and Leisure’s list of the “World’s Best Resorts”.

Staying on property: The Turnberry offers close to 700 rooms and suites spread across four towers.  Room options include traditional rooms with resort or golf course views (each room has a balcony) to one and two bedroom suites (up to 2400 square feet in size!) with ocean or golf course views. The bathrooms were impressively large with separate showers and bathtubs and well appointed amenities.  Note: The Jasmine Tower is the building closest to Tidal Cove with the easiest accessibility.

Eating on property: The Turnberry offers several great dining options on site:

  • Surf House Bar and Grill is a poolside, casual option for lunch and snacks (open 11am-5pm). There is poolside and take out services, as well as tables and chairs to dine next to the FlowRider Experience.
  • Freestyle is also located inside Tidal Cove and offers poolside and take out services and plenty of kid friendly options like pizzas, chicken fingers, burgers, pizzas and quesadillas. There is also a separate section for delicious gelato.  Open from 9am-5pm.

Tidal Cove Waterpark: The five acre waterpark, located on the Turnberry Resort property, opened in 2019 after a renovation and addition to the Turnberry Resort. The waterpark includes the massive 7,800 square foot Laguna Pool (zero entry and depths up to five feet), Kids Cove (over 4,000 square feet of swimming space and a playscape with miniature slides and a dump bucket), a Lazy River (that runs through a large portion of the park, FlowRider (see how long you can stay on the surfboard or even take a lesson from a certified instructor), and FIVE waterslides at the top of a 60 foot tower (Aqua Drop, Boomerango, Constrictor, Whizzard, and Master Blaster). Note that some of the waterslides have height and weight restrictions.

Admission to Tidal Cove is included in a stay at the JW Marriott Turnberry Resort. Tidal Cove does offer limited daily passes- more information here– and children ages three and younger are free with a paid day pass. Staff provide lounge chair covers and towels for all guests and there is plenty of space- both shaded and sunny- to lounge.

We visited on a busy day of a holiday week and the space did not feel crowded or noisy at all. The staff is pleasant and attentive, and does a great job of keeping everyone safe while also being welcoming and kind. Lines for the popular water slides were far shorter than most waterparks. Every space we explored was clean and staff was constantly refreshing towels and attending to guests’ needs with food and drinks.

30 Ways to Enjoy the Woodloch Resort this Fall

Our visit to Woodloch is easily one of our favorite adventures of 2020. We visited in 2012 and vowed to return when the kids were older and could better enjoy all of the amenities. We finally got our chance this past week and enjoyed a beautiful fall weekend in the Poconos. Established in 1958 by the Kiesendahl family, Woodloch Pines is a resort in the northwest section of the Poconos in Pennsylvania. The 350 acre property has grown over the years to now include a lakeside resort with 160 rooms and suites, times shares and private homes, a championship 18 hole golf course, a luxury spa, and a seemingly infinite amount of ways to have fun.

A visit to Woodloch focuses on family “togetherness”- most activities encourage families to work together, laugh together, and play together. There is a genuine sense of community that the staff brings to every meal, activity, and celebration. Members of the Kiesendahl family visit with guests at every meal (look out for the crazy patterned suits!). Every staff member we encountered greeted us with a warm welcome, an invitation to join in on the fun, and a sincere desire to be inclusive. We witnessed several, multi generational families vacationing together and overheard so many conversations that started with “Last year, when we did this..” or even better, “When I was your age and we played this game….”. It is clear that many, many families return to Woodloch every year to make memories, and we’re hoping to become one of those families.

    Skytop Lodge in the Poconos

Traveling during a still present pandemic: This summer we have been traveling to places that have low COVID numbers and offer opportunities for our family to explore the outdoors while keeping our distant from other groups. We went to the Poconos when our children were very little and loved the area (it’s also a super easy drive from our home). Skytop was near the top of my list to visit this summer because it offers so many activities included in our stay, so much areas to explore, and plenty of dining options right on site. We never left the resort and still had so many things we didn’t have an opportunity to do that we’ll “need” to return soon.

Skytop Lodge, located in the Poconos of Pennsylvania, will transport guests to a bygone area. The main lodge, open since 1928, has grown over the past almost-century to a 55,000 acre resort that includes an 18 hole golf course, 2 pools, lakeside beach, miles of hiking trails, 5 restaurants, and dozens of daily activities for families of all ages. The grounds are stunning: manicured grass, lush gardens, and so many places to sit and relax (rocking on the back porch is a must!). There are flowers arrangements on every table in every space and every single one is fresh! Garden lovers should visit the gorgeous Flower Shop on the lower level of the main lodge.

20 New England Places to Visit in the Winter

New England is my home. I love it. Every trip I take outside New England is wonderful- and a wonderful reminder of how much I love where I grew up and where I now live with my family. New England is known for its beautiful beaches and ocean water in the summer, stunning foliage in the fall, countless places to ski and skate in the winter, and open spaces to enjoy the outdoors in the spring. However, if you’re prone to sunburns, frostbite, and allergies, consider these places to visit for plenty of indoor fun (and yes, they’re just as great in the summer too!)

10 Greats Spots for Walking in Newport, Rhode Island

Known as “the City by the Sea”, Newport, Rhode Island, is also known for its Gilded Age mansions that were the “summer cottages” of business tycoons of the early 1900s. Today, visitors can tour many of the mansions, learn about the rich history of the area in local museums, and sample a wide variety of cuisine with hundreds of shopping and dinning options. My family is fortunate to live within a day trip’s drive and we often visit Newport for the day and for long weekends. You can read our City Guide from a couple of years ago (we’ll be updating it soon) and our post featuring holiday fun in Newport.

Celebrating the Holiday Season in Newport, RI

Founded in 1639 and known as the “City by the Sea”, Newport, Rhode Island has been welcoming beach lovers to its sandy shores every since that time. During the famous “Gilded Age” in America, business tycoons built summer “cottages” to retreat to during the summer months. Today, the mansions of Newport are still the most visited spots in the city; however, there is so much to do in Newport after touring the mansions and surfing in the ocean waters.

Growing up on the South Shore of Massachusetts, and having an avid sailor for a father, my family took many day trips to visit Newport. As an adult, I have returned to Newport many times: with my husband for a weekend getaway and with girlfriends as an escape from the duties of motherhood. This past weekend, I took my husband and children to explore Newport in the “shoulder season” and usher in the holiday season. Today’s post begins a series of all Newport has to offer:

Stamford Museum & Nature Center in Connecticut

The Stamford Museum and Nature Center in Stamford, Connecticut is practically in my backyard and yet it’s taken me almost 12 years to visit! We’ve felt most comfortable visiting outdoor locations due to the COVID 19 pandemics, so this seemed like the perfect time to explore the farm and nature center.

There are over 80 acres of gardens, trails, and buildings spread out across the complex. Visitors are welcome to visit with animals, smell the fruits and vegetables in the garden, check out the playground, explore the mansion, and hike and walk some of the trails.

  1. As Marriott loyalty members it is always great to find comprehensive reviews about great properties we can visit. The JW Marriott Turnberry Resort looks like a place we should plan to visit. I can see why this could be put on a list of the “Worlds Best Resorts”. The Tidal Cove Waterpark would be a fun spot to enjoy – even for big kids! Or maybe just a spa day.

  2. The JW Marriot Turnberry looks like such a great place for a weekend getaway in Miami. While I am not much for waterparks anymore, I can see the appeal for kids and those young at heart. I would totally hit up the pool and spa!
