Tidal Cove at the JW Marriott Turnberry Resort and Spa in Miami

| | | | |

On a recent holiday visit to see family who live in southern Florida (we’ve visited many times- see our West Palm Beach City Guide here), we were looking for a new spot to explore. My brother shared that the JW Marriott Turnberry Resort and Spa always received high praise from people in the area and would be a great fit with our families. We booked an overnight stay at the Turnberry and had a wonderful time!

The Turnberry Resort and Spa is a JW Marriott property, one of the brand’s luxury level resorts, that spans over 300 acres in northern Miami. The property opened in the early 1970s, with extensive renovations and additions in the 1990s, and the acquisition as a JW Marriott property in 2018, including the addition of the Tidal Cove Waterpark. The resort is well known for its championship golf courses and luxury spa, numerous dining options, a private marina with guest boat rentals, and several family friendly amenities and attractions. The Turnberry frequently receives accolades, including Travel and Leisure’s list of the “World’s Best Resorts”.

Staying on property: The Turnberry offers close to 700 rooms and suites spread across four towers.  Room options include traditional rooms with resort or golf course views (each room has a balcony) to one and two bedroom suites (up to 2400 square feet in size!) with ocean or golf course views. The bathrooms were impressively large with separate showers and bathtubs and well appointed amenities.  Note: The Jasmine Tower is the building closest to Tidal Cove with the easiest accessibility.

Eating on property: The Turnberry offers several great dining options on site:

  • Surf House Bar and Grill is a poolside, casual option for lunch and snacks (open 11am-5pm). There is poolside and take out services, as well as tables and chairs to dine next to the FlowRider Experience.
  • Freestyle is also located inside Tidal Cove and offers poolside and take out services and plenty of kid friendly options like pizzas, chicken fingers, burgers, pizzas and quesadillas. There is also a separate section for delicious gelato.  Open from 9am-5pm.
  • Starbucks is located next to the Spa, on the right side of the main entrance to the resort. Open every day from 6am-6pm.
  • Bourbon Steak (open for dinner each night) and Soff’s Lobby Lounge (drinks only from 4pm-11pm) are best suited for adults.

Tidal Cove Waterpark: The five acre waterpark, located on the Turnberry Resort property, opened in 2019 after a renovation and addition to the Turnberry Resort. The waterpark includes the massive 7,800 square foot Laguna Pool (zero entry and depths up to five feet), Kids Cove (over 4,000 square feet of swimming space and a playscape with miniature slides and a dump bucket), a Lazy River (that runs through a large portion of the park, FlowRider (see how long you can stay on the surfboard or even take a lesson from a certified instructor), and FIVE waterslides at the top of a 60 foot tower (Aqua Drop, Boomerango, Constrictor, Whizzard, and Master Blaster). Note that some of the waterslides have height and weight restrictions.

Admission to Tidal Cove is included in a stay at the JW Marriott Turnberry Resort. Tidal Cove does offer limited daily passes- more information here– and children ages three and younger are free with a paid day pass. Staff provide lounge chair covers and towels for all guests and there is plenty of space- both shaded and sunny- to lounge.

We visited on a busy day of a holiday week and the space did not feel crowded or noisy at all. The staff is pleasant and attentive, and does a great job of keeping everyone safe while also being welcoming and kind. Lines for the popular water slides were far shorter than most waterparks. Every space we explored was clean and staff was constantly refreshing towels and attending to guests’ needs with food and drinks.

    New York State Capitol Building

Albany, New York, located just two hours north of famed New York City, was established by the Dutch in the early 1660s. I recently did some research for family centered activities in the area, as my family drives past Albany a few times a year on our way to visit close friends in Utica, New York. On a recent trip, we stopped to explore the New York State Capitol building, at the top of the State Street hill. The “current” Albany State Capitol took over 20 years to build, post Civil War. The building has gone through many phases of of restoration, as recently as the early 2000s.

Tours of the Capitol are offered four times a day during the week and twice on Saturday. Tours are free, but reservations are highly recommended (go here), as they are usually limited to 25 people and quickly fill up. Tours are very different during the week, when everything is in session and the entire building is bustling with elected officials. If you prefer a calmer experience, the weekend tour is a safer bet, but you’ll miss the chance to possible see elected governmental officials.

10 Things Kids Will Want to Do at Hancock Shaker Village

Traveling during a still present pandemic: If you’ve been following our adventures this summer, you know that our family has taken precautions to stay safe. We’ve limited our exploration to nearby states with lower COVID cases and to mainly outdoor spaces that take proper precautions to keep staff and visitors safe. Hancock Shaker Village was an easy choice- tons of open space to socially distance, only one family in a building structure at a time (with all doors and windows open to allow for better ventilation), and absolutely nothing to touch. While Hancock Shaker Village is a great place to visit anytime, it’s a very safe bet for family fun during these uncertain times.

Celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2020, the Hancock Shaker Village is the oldest working farm in the Berkshires part of western Massachusetts. The Village was originally home to the Shaker community from the late 1700s until 1959, when it was turned into a museum that includes over 22,000 original artifacts and a research library. The 750 acre complex has a 20 acre working farm, 20 buildings with live interpreters, a massive garden with a very popular Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), and tons of hiking trails, meadows, and woodlands that abut the Pittsfield State Forest.

15 Ways to Explore the Kirby Science Center in Sioux Falls, SD

This summer, we spent an unexpected few days in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. We were supposed to stay overnight as a layover on our way to Wisconsin, but when we saw all of the family friendly activities, we decided to extend our visit. We had a wonderful 3+ days exploring the area. One of our favorite spots was the  Kirby Science Discovery Center, located in the Washington Pavilion.

    The New York Botanical Garden

The New York Botanical Garden is one of my favorite places to visit. My family lives less than an hour from the Bronx and it’s a pretty drive on the parkways. The 250 acre campus was created in 1891 and has over one million planets, 30,000 trees, and over four million specimens on site. They have dozens of classes, workshops, field trips, family events, summer camps, and even college degrees; the fall 2017 catalog is 55 pages!  There is so.much.to.do for every age and interest; the Saturday morning bird watching walks are especially popular.

We purchased a family membership four years ago and we visit at least once a season (yes, it is beautiful to visit during the winter!).  The children always enjoy visiting, and the entire campus is stroller friendly (they will ask you to leave stroller outside at some buildings). Plus, they do a nice job of having plenty of clean restrooms spread throughout The Garden. The grounds are accessible by train, local buses, and car- there is a good size parking lot and a garage not too far away. You’ll notice my photos span the past 5 year when we started visiting

    EcoTarium, Worchester, MA

During a recent trip to visit my dear friend, Sandy, and her family in Natick, Massachusetts, we spied rain in the forecast. Sandy found a great spot for us to meet in nearby Worchester, Massachusetts (more on family fun in Worchester coming soon!): EcoTarium.

EcoTarium participates in the Association of Children’s Museums and the Association of Science-Technology Centers reciprocity programs. This means that my friend’s membership to her local science center (or I could have used my membership to our local children’s museum) allowed her to bring us as guests- for free. This is a wonderful program that my family has taken advantage of dozens of times. Look for an upcoming post about all the benefits.

Part science center, part zoo, part outdoor classroom,EcoTarium also has a planetarium, outdoor train ride, plenty of hands on exhibits, and is tons of fun for toddlers, children, and adults alike! Here are our favorite parts:

  1. As Marriott loyalty members it is always great to find comprehensive reviews about great properties we can visit. The JW Marriott Turnberry Resort looks like a place we should plan to visit. I can see why this could be put on a list of the “Worlds Best Resorts”. The Tidal Cove Waterpark would be a fun spot to enjoy – even for big kids! Or maybe just a spa day.

  2. The JW Marriot Turnberry looks like such a great place for a weekend getaway in Miami. While I am not much for waterparks anymore, I can see the appeal for kids and those young at heart. I would totally hit up the pool and spa!
