FDR Presidential Library, Museum, and NHS, Hyde Park, New York

We just returned from a wonderful trip to Dutchess County, New York. Less than two hours from Manhattan, Dutchess County is filled with hundreds of ways to learn about American history, agriculture, and the arts. Whenever we travel, we always check our National Parks Passport and our Presidential Library Passport to see if there are any locations near our destination. We hit a double when we found The Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library & Museum and the Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site, both located on the same property in Hyde Park, New York. We love the National Park Service (read about why here) and our son is quickly becoming a presidential scholar, so we had to spend the morning exploring the complex. America’s first presidential library and museum was designed by FDR himself and opened to the public in 1941. The museum has over 400 collections, including 51,00 volumes and 150,000 photographs, negatives and audiovisual items, as well as plenty of research and meeting spaces.

The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville, Tennessee

We’re not huge country music fans, but while in Nashville this summer, we figured it was only appropriate to listen to what the locals listen to and blend in with the crowd. There’s no better place to listen to, and learn about, country music than the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. It’s located in downtown Nashville, close to many area attractions. (I’ll have a full list of our fun in Nashville in the coming weeks.)
I was uncertain if my children would be engaged throughout our self guided tour ( we decided to forego the audio tour). I was so pleasantly surprised at how child friendly the museum is! There is plenty to see and do, even for younger, non-country loving kids. We spent over two hours inside the museum and could have stayed longer had we not had another reservation.

The Health Museum in Houston, Texas

Opened in 1996 in Houston, the John P. McGovern Museum of Health and Medical Science, aka The Health Museum for short, welcomes over two million visitors each year. Recently renovated, the museum also has plans to expand the four permanent exhibits in the near future. The Health Museum is located in the Houston Museum District, an area encompassing 19 different museums and recreational spots, along with plenty of restaurant options. On a recent trip to Houston (stay tuned for an upcoming post on all things family-friendly in Houston), we had the chance to explore The Health Museum. If you’re local to the Houston area, I recommend checking out their programming schedule; there is a wide variety of classes and camps offered throughout the year (they even have real organ dissections!!).

Submarine Force Museum and HS Nautilus, Groton Connecticut

When I mention I live in Connecticut, many people will exclaim “Oh you must know a lot of maritime and submarine history having the sub base nearby.” I’ve driven by Groton for the past 38 years and yet, until recently, I had not visited the area, known as the “Submarine Capital of the World.” On a spring break trip to nearby Mystic, Connecticut we stopped for the morning in Groton to finally explore the Submarine Force Museum, and tour the HS Nautilus. While the actual Naval Submarine Base in New London is closed to the public, keep driving past the base until you hit the waterfront: On the left is the library, museum, and gift shop; straight ahead is the HS Nautilus; and to the right is the parking lot and various memorials.

New Bedford Whaling Museum

New Bedford, the sixth largest city in Massachusetts located about an hour south of Boston, is known as the whaling capital of the world. At the height of the whaling industry in the mid 1850s, New Bedford employed over 10,000 sailors on over 300 ships. There’s no better place to learn about the history of the whaling industry than the New Bedford Whaling Museum. Housed in a building originally built as a bank in 1803, the space was converted into a museum in 1903. My family recently spent the weekend in New Bedford (you can read about all of our adventures here) and visiting the Whaling Museum was one of our trip highlights. Admission tickets to the museum are valid for two consecutive days, so you can take your time exploring.

National Baseball Hall of Fame & Museum

The major impetus for the road trips my family has become known for is our love of baseball. To date, we’ve seen 22 of the 30 Major League baseball parks and we’re on track to visit two more in 2018. We love baseball. So when we planned a trip to visit friends near Utica, New York we decided to make a short detour to visit the village of Cooperstown, New York, home of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. Independently owned, the National Baseball Hall of Fame elected its first class in 1936 and the original Hall of Fame (which sits on the property of the current museum) opened in 1939. It was built in Cooperstown because of a now debunked theory that Abner Doubelday invented the sport in Cooperstown in 1839.
The museum is quite popular, welcoming about 275,000 visitors each year; on a typical summer day, the museum sees over 2,000 visitors. Many nearby attractions are only open in season (in April-May and September-October with limited hours, and full time June-August), which would make a summer visit appealing. However, if you really want to linger and get up close to every display and plaque in the Hall of Fame (and still have lots of lodging and restaurant choices), come in the quiet off season. I imagine mid and late October would be especially beautiful with the foliage.
