I just returned from a wonderful weekend in Hyde Park, New York, home of former US President Franklin D. Roosevelt. I have been to the area before with my family (we published a whole City Guide to Dutchess County with tons of family friendly activities), but this trip was focused on catching up with old college friends and eating lots of good meals at the Culinary Institute of America. We arrived early on Friday afternoon to take a public tour of the campus and learn about the Institute’s impressive history.

Whenever our family visits a capital city, we always make time to tour the State Capitol. We love learning about a state’s history, its involvement in American history, and learning fun state trivia and what makes each state unique. This summer, we stopped in Richmond for a second tour (we originally visited in 2014 before we started publishing our blog) of the Virginia State Capitol and enjoyed touring the House and Senate Chambers and other significant spaces throughout the Capitol.

We just returned from a few days in St. Andrews, one of Canada’s first seaside resort areas. We originally were using the stop as a layover before another destination, but ended up spending three days enjoying all of the historical sites, attractions, and beautiful beaches and parks. One of the most popular maritime communities in Canada, St. Andrews is a designated National Historic District in the province of New Brunswick, less than 30 minutes from the American border.
