10 Must Do Activities at the Disney’s Contemporary Resort

| | | |

Disney’s Contemporary Resort is one of the most popular resorts and hotels on Disney property in Orlando, Florida- and for good reason! Considered a deluxe resort because of its amenities and proximity to the Magic Kingdom and Epcot Parks, the Contemporary Resort offers family fun for all ages all day every day! We’ve been to Disney World three times, and each time we’ve stayed at a different level resort. On our second trip we splurged and stayed at the Contemporary Resort and enjoyed many activities as a family. Here are our top ten favorite things at the Contemporary Resort:

1. Have a dance Party at Chef Mickey’s: It’s considered one of the most coveted reservations in the whole Disney complex and for good reason; it’s the only restaurant where you can see the five “original” character: Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Pluto, and Goofy. The characters host a fun dance party every hour, too.. Get your napkins ready!

2. Dine at California Grill: it’s definitely more upscale than Chef Mickey’s, and you’ll order off a menu instead of a buffet. There is an extensive wine list  for the adults and plenty of options for children. Note: If you’re dining on the Disney Dining Plan, California Grill counts as two meals.

3. Watch nightly fireworks from the roof over Magic Kingdom: California Grill has a an outdoor viewing area. The restaurant pipes synchronized music both inside the restaurant and to outdoor viewing area. You can also see fireworks from the 4th floor balconies located behind the gift shops.

4. Watch the Electric Water Pageant in Bay Lake. Each night the water parade, set to patriotic music, passes by several resorts. Usually, the parade reaches the Contemporary Resort around 10:10pm but check with resort staff to confirm.

5. Swim in the Feature Pool: it has a 17 foot high water slide, water playground, hot tub, and cabanas available for rental. Bonus: it’s heated and open all year!

Would you like to save this?

We'll email this post to you, so you can come back to it later.

6. Watch a movie under the stars: Offered outside each night, most resorts showcase family friendly Disney movies. Bonus: often, a camp fire with treats is offered about an hour before the movie starts.

7. Hop aboard the launch boat to the Wilderness Lodge: Have a super fun, super yummy meal Whispering Canyon Cafe. Hint: Don’t forget to ask for ketchup with your meal. Trust me!

8. Ride the monorail from INSIDE the resort: Enter the Transportation Center on the fourth floor to travel to Epcot, the Polynesian Village and Grand Floridian Resorts, and the Magic Kingdom Park.  Note: You will have to take an elevator to the second floor and then a separate elevator back up to your hotel room floor. The #1 reason we like the Contemporary is for its proximity to so many places, as well as the convenience of having the monorail literally “in house.”

9. Walk to the Magic Kingdom: The Contemporary is the only one of two resorts offering direct access to Magic Kingdom. This is especially helpful after the nightly fireworks show- you’ll avoid the massive lines for the monorail, buses, and boat launches.

10. Drop the kids off for a night of fun at the Pixar Play Zone. Hosted by characters from Toy Story and The Incredibles, there is Space Ranger training, race car building, dance party, and a yummy dinner with dessert. Note: There is an additional charge for this event. My family has not attended this event, but it’s on our list for our next visit!

Five Ways to Explore the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse & Museum in Jupiter, Florida

We’ve explored Palm Beach County, Florida many times when visiting family in Delray Beach. This past trip, we finally had time to stop at the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse and Museum that we’ve passed several times and enjoyed exploring the ever expanding complex.

Operated by the Loxahatchee River Historical Society, the first lighthouse museum opened in 1973 and now welcomes over 800,000 visitors to the complex each year. The nonprofit manages the 1860 Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse and Oil House, 1892 George Washington Tindall House, 1929 Lighthouse Keeper’s Workshop, and 1940 Naval Housing Building (currently closed due to nearby bridge construction). The lighthouse and museums are located on a complex, owned by the town of Jupiter, which also include large sports fields, nature trails, and a large playground.

10 Things Kids Will Want to Do at Hancock Shaker Village

Traveling during a still present pandemic: If you’ve been following our adventures this summer, you know that our family has taken precautions to stay safe. We’ve limited our exploration to nearby states with lower COVID cases and to mainly outdoor spaces that take proper precautions to keep staff and visitors safe. Hancock Shaker Village was an easy choice- tons of open space to socially distance, only one family in a building structure at a time (with all doors and windows open to allow for better ventilation), and absolutely nothing to touch. While Hancock Shaker Village is a great place to visit anytime, it’s a very safe bet for family fun during these uncertain times.

Celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2020, the Hancock Shaker Village is the oldest working farm in the Berkshires part of western Massachusetts. The Village was originally home to the Shaker community from the late 1700s until 1959, when it was turned into a museum that includes over 22,000 original artifacts and a research library. The 750 acre complex has a 20 acre working farm, 20 buildings with live interpreters, a massive garden with a very popular Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), and tons of hiking trails, meadows, and woodlands that abut the Pittsfield State Forest.

    Dutchess County, New York

Dutchess County, located in southeastern New York, spans from Fishkill and Beacon to Rhinebeck and Red Hook covering (in total) thirty cities, towns, and villages. There are literally hundreds of ways to explore the area, but I thought I would share twelve ways families can enjoy all that Dutchess County has to offer together. The county borders western Connecticut and is about 90 minutes from Manhattan. Driving from the north end of Red Hook south to Beacon takes less than an hour, so you won’t spend days in the car exploring the area.

Start your planning by checking out DutchessTourism.com, which is a well organized, well informed network of suggestions for eating, staying, and exploring the county.  They have a section dedicated to family fun and even have itineraries broken up in one, three, and five day stays (in additional to organizing suggestions for shopping, craft beer, spa, LGBT and other themed trips).

Playing “I Spy” at the Connecticut State Capitol

Visiting state capitol buildings is one of the first things we do when visiting the capital city. It’s a little ironic that it took our family, who has lived in Connecticut for almost 20 years, this long, but we recently, finally made it to the CT Capitol for a tour.

Connecticut was founded in 1662 and is known as the Constitution State, as it was the first state to adopt a constitution.  Built in 1878, the Connecticut Capitol building, located in downtown Hartford, was designed by Richard M. Upjohn to replicate a Victorian Gothic style. The building overlooks Bushnell Memorial Park’s 41 acres in the heart of Hartford and was restored in the 1980s to the original colors and design. The addition of the Legislative Office Building (LOB), which opened in 1988, allowed for office space for Connecticut’s 151 Representatives (each representing approximately 25,000 constituents)  and 36 State Senators (each representing approximately 90,000-100,000 constituents). The “LOB” also allows for more public meeting spaces and opportunities for state officials to meet as committees and with public interest groups. The first and second floors of the LOB and the first floor of the Capitol are both open to the public; upper level floors house private offices and chambers and guests must be accompanied by officials.

10 Winter Activities for the Whole Family at Crystal Springs Resort in New Jersey

One of our favorite highlights of 2020 was the opportunity to visit Crystal Springs Resort in northwestern New Jersey (an hour from New York City), and from the moment we left the resort property, our children have been asking to return. Since we first visited during the summer, we thought it would be fun to see the resort during the winter (ish) season. So this past weekend we headed back to New Jersey’s favorite resort (a well-earned title) for a Winter Wonderland weekend of holiday magic.

32 Places to Eat in Connecticut

Our recent list of 30 Places We Love in Connecticut received some great feedback. We’re glad so many people enjoy (and agreed with) some of our favorite spots. I thought about including some of our favorite places to eat, but decided food needs its own post!

This is by no means a comprehensive list. Our suggestions below are definitely Fairfield and New County heavy, as that’s our home base. If you’re looking for a larger variety, check out this recent list from Connecticut Magazine. I subscribe to Connecticut magazine and always save this annual issue- so many great suggestions. One of my other favorite guides for dining in Connecticut is CTBites.com. They offer weekly newsletters with updates, special events, and holiday menus. You might also be interested in this guide to eating gluten free in Connecticut and this guide from Mommy Poppins, which includes peanut free spots.
