    15 Interactive Ways to Explore the Museum of Broadway in New York City:

    We were thrilled to be invited to the brand new Museum of Broadway in New York City this past weekend. The 26,000 square foot, three floor museum opened in November 2022 and is already receiving a lot of positive buzz.

    The Museum of Broadway is designed to take guests through a chronological history of “the Great White Way” (the nickname for Broadway because of the bright lights of the theater marques), with three major segments: The Map Room, The Timeline, and The Making of a Broadway Show. All three parts include tons of original costumes, scripts, daily itineraries, mock ups of sets, film footage of interviews with casts and crews, awards, and highlights of popular shows from each era. Guests begin by walking up three flights of “backstage stairs” to the dressing room area and following a path through three floors of exhibits.

We love being by, on, and even IN the water (ocean water is our favorite) and we love studying history. Even better, we love when we can combine them and learn a little nautical history. A couple of years ago, we featured this post with over a dozen attractions dedicated to boats and the boating industry and it received a lot of great feedback.  This week, we’re sharing five museums in the Northeast that include the important history of the whaling industry. The northeast has a rich history of whaling, and some ports were once known as the Whaling Capitals of the World. All five spots offer plenty of hands-on ways to engage the entire family.

    Five Ways to Explore the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse & Museum in Jupiter, Florida

    We’ve explored Palm Beach County, Florida many times when visiting family in Delray Beach. This past trip, we finally had time to stop at the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse and Museum that we’ve passed several times and enjoyed exploring the ever expanding complex.

    Operated by the Loxahatchee River Historical Society, the first lighthouse museum opened in 1973 and now welcomes over 800,000 visitors to the complex each year. The nonprofit manages the 1860 Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse and Oil House, 1892 George Washington Tindall House, 1929 Lighthouse Keeper’s Workshop, and 1940 Naval Housing Building (currently closed due to nearby bridge construction). The lighthouse and museums are located on a complex, owned by the town of Jupiter, which also include large sports fields, nature trails, and a large playground.

    Eight Tips for Exploring Storm King Art Center in New York with Kids

    Our family enjoys visiting various art museums whenever we’re in a new city (see an index of art museums we’ve explored here and reasons why you should bring kids to art museum here ) but we’re usually accustomed to the traditional, indoor, stand far away and don’t even think of touching ANYTHING type of art museum. And then we heard about Storm King Art Center in New Windsor, New York (60 miles north of Manhattan, 50 miles from the Connecticut border, and in the heart of the Hudson Valley), and we knew we had found a “kid friendly” art center to explore.

    10 Ways to Explore the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum in Florida

    Located across the street from Lighthouse Park and Cox Recreation Facility (both maintained by the city of St. Augustine), the St. Augustine Lighthouse and Maritime Museum complex  features indoor and outdoor exhibits, walking trails, and the opportunity to climb to the top of the lighthouse.

    Built in 1856, the first watchtower was 350 yards closer to the ocean than the current complex. The second tower, 165 feet tall, followed less than 20 years later, including the addition of the 1876 home for Head Keeper William Farn, Assistant Keeper Joseph Rantia and their families. Lightkeepers tended to the lighthouse until the mid 1950s when the light became automated.  The Junior Service League saved the property from being bulldozed in the 1970s and spent almost 20 years restoring the lighthouse tower, innkeeper’s home, and the original Fresnel lens. The museum officially opened in 1994 with a collection of over 19,000 artifacts and documents providing a timeline of the history of the lighthouse, its occupants, and the greater St. Augustine area.

    Playing “I Spy” at the Flagler Museum on Palm Beach Island, Florida

    We recently spent time exploring St. Augustine Florida, a city that Henry Flagler basically built after the start of his 1912 Florida East Coast Railway and subsequent hotels, hospitals, schools, churches, and farms. (Read more about our adventures in St. Augustine in these posts. So, it was fitting when we also traveled to the West Palm Beach area of Florida in the same trip, we spent the morning at Flagler’s “winter cottage”

    Henry Flagler was successful in the grain and salt mining industries before he helped to found the Standard Oil Company with John D. Rockefeller and Samuel Andrews in 1867.  When he married his third wife, Mary Lily Flager, in August 1901, he promised her a “waterfront winter cottage” and had “Whitehall”, as it was named, built in a record 18 months. The Flaglers spent approximately two months there each year until Flagler’s death in 1913.
