On a recent try to Portsmouth, New Hampshire we had the opportunity to explore a popular National Historic Landmark, the USS Albacore Park. The park includes a maritime museum, memorial garden, and the 206 foot long submarine, all open to the public to enjoy and explore.
The Walt Whitman Birthplace and State National Historic Site in Huntington on Long Island, New York is the former home of the Whitman family, including one of America’s greatest poets, Walt Whitman, who was born in the first floor bedroom in 1819.
The fall and spring weekend home of William and Mai Coe and their four children during the “Gilded Age” of the 20th century, Planting Fields is a 400 acre estate, home to dozens of designed gardens, five miles of woodland trails, two green houses, and a 65 room Tudor Revival style home. William Coe, a Brit who came to America as a young child and made his fortunes in marine insurance (he insured the Titanic!). The family primarily lived in Manhattan and spent their summers on a Wyoming ranch. They enjoyed Planting Fields for the outdoor spaces and often spent time horseback riding and hiking.
Washington D.C., our nation’s capital city, is full of family friendly attractions, historical sites and museums, cultural events, and open spaces to appreciate nature. Many sites are free to explore, thanks to the Smithsonian Institute, and many sites have only a nominal charge. The island of Manhattan, one of the five boroughs in New York City, is home to close to two million people, thousands of hotels and restaurants, and tons of kid friendly activities. We’ve fortunate enough to live just a short drive from Manhattan and have enjoyed exploring many museums, theaters, sporting venues, restaurants, parks, historical sites, and cultural attractions over the past 15 years. One of the most popular historical attractions in Brooklyn, New York, the NY Transit Museum celebrates the history of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), which began in 1900 with the construction of the subway system. The NY Transit Museum was founded in 1976 and is housed in a decommissioned 1936 subway station in downtown Brooklyn. The museum features permanent exhibits that tell the stories of the over seven thousand workers who built the first subway line that opened in 1904 (today there are over 70,000 MTA employees!) as well as rotating exhibits about the changes in technology and culture of New York City.
