Playing “I Spy” While Touring the American Club in Kohler, WI

|

On our recent holiday visit to Kohler, Wisconsin, we had the good fortune to enjoy the American Club, a Historic Hotels of America member, in the heart of the Kohler Village. The resort was an early 20th century dormitory for European workers who came to the area to work in the Kohler factory. Today, the AAA Five- Diamond and Forbes Five Star resort offers almost 200 rooms and suites, four restaurants, and several daily activities and amenities at the resort and many more amenities throughout the village. See a helpful map of the Kohler resort here.

One of the activities we most enjoyed was a guided tour of the American Club property, which included a complete history of the growing city of Sheboygan and nearby farmland,  Kohler family, and the Kohler company. The general areas of the resort, including restaurants, are open to the public, but an overnight stay at the American Club is a must do! Either way, take the daily guided tour and see if you can find some of the highlights we enjoyed.

Playing I Spy at the American Club:

  1. Count the portraits and profiles of Abraham Lincoln in the Lincoln Room, which was once the study for workers preparing for their citizenship test and is now the game room. Check out the cozy fireplace and famous Lincoln quote etched in the mantle: Let us have faith that right makes might and in that faith. Let us to the end dare to do our duty as we understand it.
  2. Check out the grand piano in the Library, which dates back over a century. Festive cocktail hours with live music are offered throughout the week- check the daily calendar.
  3. Look carefully at the two tapestries that hang in the Wisconsin Room, which was the original Mess Hall, serving 1,000 men three meals a day. One of the tapestries displays the ethnic groups of Wisconsin, including the former governor, and one tapestry displays the flag of Wisconsin. The stained glass windows in the room also portray factory workers of the Kohler company.
  4. Walk the hallway of Heritage Wall which displays photos documenting the evolution of the Kohler Company. Find the floor plans and menus throughout the decades, and Declaration of Intention certificates for many of the immigrant workers.
  5. Peek inside the Immigrant Room, a four star restaurant (the lack of a view is the only reason the restaurant is missing the fifth star!) and see the various themed dining rooms which honor the countries of the former workers (Dutch, French, German, Danish, and English) in decor.

  1. Check out the unique features of all four courtyards– there are ponds, gazebos, and footbridges, as well as various flowers blooming in season and festive holiday decorations in the winter.
  2. Keep an eye out for the old fashioned, but working, landline phones in every hallway- used frequently for guests who get lost in the maze of halls.
  3. Read some of the name placards on the doors of all 184 rooms. Each room is named for a famous American (as determined by the Archives Committee of the resort), although not every honoree has stayed at the resort. Inside the room there is a portrait and short biography of the honoree.
  4. Count the Waterford chandeliers on display on the Conference Center level called the Grand Hall of the Great Lakes. Each ballroom is named for a Great Lake.
  5. Stop inside the Greenhouse, a bright and light cafe modeled after an English garden, serving freshly prepared warm and cold drinks, sweet treats, and even gelato!

    Skytop Lodge in the Poconos

Traveling during a still present pandemic: This summer we have been traveling to places that have low COVID numbers and offer opportunities for our family to explore the outdoors while keeping our distant from other groups. We went to the Poconos when our children were very little and loved the area (it’s also a super easy drive from our home). Skytop was near the top of my list to visit this summer because it offers so many activities included in our stay, so much areas to explore, and plenty of dining options right on site. We never left the resort and still had so many things we didn’t have an opportunity to do that we’ll “need” to return soon.

Skytop Lodge, located in the Poconos of Pennsylvania, will transport guests to a bygone area. The main lodge, open since 1928, has grown over the past almost-century to a 55,000 acre resort that includes an 18 hole golf course, 2 pools, lakeside beach, miles of hiking trails, 5 restaurants, and dozens of daily activities for families of all ages. The grounds are stunning: manicured grass, lush gardens, and so many places to sit and relax (rocking on the back porch is a must!). There are flowers arrangements on every table in every space and every single one is fresh! Garden lovers should visit the gorgeous Flower Shop on the lower level of the main lodge.

30 Ways to Have Fun at Crystal Springs Resort in New Jersey

Crystal Springs Resort, the largest golf resort in the Northeast, offers so much more than “just” golf for families, couples, and friends who vacation together. Located in the northern part of New Jersey, an hour from Manhattan, the resort includes two resorts, situated three miles apart: Grand Cascades Lodge and Minerals. The resorts feature six golf courses (4 courses with 18 holes and 2 courses with 9 holes); 10 restaurants, bistros, and grills; three pool complexes; and hundreds (literally!) of ways to have fun. I spent a wonderful weekend at Grand Cascades Lodge two years ago with college friends and have wanted to bring my family back ever since that visit.

Ocean Edge Resort on Cape Cod in Massachusetts

I grew up less than an hour from Cape Cod, which is located south of Boston- it’s the “flexed arm” in the Massachusetts state outline. We often took day trips to various villages and beaches on the Cape but rarely stayed on site overnight. I didn’t know what I was missing out on until our recent visit to the Ocean Edge Resort.

Located in Brewster, Massachusetts, in the middle of the Cape, Ocean Edge Resort is a world class resort spread over 400+ acres with its own private beach, 18 hole golf course, 9 tennis courts, 5 pools, and endless amounts of family fun. During the popular summer season, the resort offers daily programming in sports, fitness, dining, and kid friendly activities. There’s a seasonal shuttle throughout the complex so guests can simply “pahk the cah” (you are in Massachusetts, of course) and immediately get into vacation mode.

    Our Summer 2020 Recap

Summer 2020 wasn’t exactly what we were expecting, and it definitely wasn’t what we had been planning for a LONG time. June marked a milestone birthday for me and we had planned on celebrating with a big trip to places that have been on our bucket list for many year. Luckily, we rescheduled this trip for next summer- so cross your fingers and stay tuned!

Each summer, we make individual “Bucket Lists” of things we want to do. Some common goals that the four of us shared are part of the highlights below. We’re grateful we were able to accomplish so much and fully recognize how fortunate we are. Here are the highlights:

Once the pandemic hit, we knew we’d have to shift our perspective and our travel plans. Our major goals for any trip include: staying safe and healthy; doing our best to keep others safe and healthy; respecting local and state guidelines and regulations; learning new things; having fun.
