10 Must Do Activities at the Disney’s Contemporary Resort

Disney’s Contemporary Resort is one of the most popular resorts and hotels on Disney property in Orlando, Florida- and for good reason! Considered a deluxe resort because of its amenities and proximity to the Magic Kingdom and Epcot Parks, the Contemporary Resort offers family fun for all ages all day every day! We’ve been to Disney World three times, and each time we’ve stayed at a different level resort. On our second trip we splurged and stayed at the Contemporary Resort and enjoyed many activities as a family. Here are our top ten favorite things at the Contemporary Resort:

1. Have a dance Party at Chef Mickey’s: It’s considered one of the most coveted reservations in the whole Disney complex and for good reason; it’s the only restaurant where you can see the five “original” character: Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Pluto, and Goofy. The characters host a fun dance party every hour, too.. Get your napkins ready!

2. Dine at California Grill: it’s definitely more upscale than Chef Mickey’s, and you’ll order off a menu instead of a buffet. There is an extensive wine list  for the adults and plenty of options for children. Note: If you’re dining on the Disney Dining Plan, California Grill counts as two meals.

3. Watch nightly fireworks from the roof over Magic Kingdom: California Grill has a an outdoor viewing area. The restaurant pipes synchronized music both inside the restaurant and to outdoor viewing area. You can also see fireworks from the 4th floor balconies located behind the gift shops.

4. Watch the Electric Water Pageant in Bay Lake. Each night the water parade, set to patriotic music, passes by several resorts. Usually, the parade reaches the Contemporary Resort around 10:10pm but check with resort staff to confirm.

5. Swim in the Feature Pool: it has a 17 foot high water slide, water playground, hot tub, and cabanas available for rental. Bonus: it’s heated and open all year!

6. Watch a movie under the stars: Offered outside each night, most resorts showcase family friendly Disney movies. Bonus: often, a camp fire with treats is offered about an hour before the movie starts.

7. Hop aboard the launch boat to the Wilderness Lodge: Have a super fun, super yummy meal Whispering Canyon Cafe. Hint: Don’t forget to ask for ketchup with your meal. Trust me!

8. Ride the monorail from INSIDE the resort: Enter the Transportation Center on the fourth floor to travel to Epcot, the Polynesian Village and Grand Floridian Resorts, and the Magic Kingdom Park.  Note: You will have to take an elevator to the second floor and then a separate elevator back up to your hotel room floor. The #1 reason we like the Contemporary is for its proximity to so many places, as well as the convenience of having the monorail literally “in house.”

9. Walk to the Magic Kingdom: The Contemporary is the only one of two resorts offering direct access to Magic Kingdom. This is especially helpful after the nightly fireworks show- you’ll avoid the massive lines for the monorail, buses, and boat launches.

10. Drop the kids off for a night of fun at the Pixar Play Zone. Hosted by characters from Toy Story and The Incredibles, there is Space Ranger training, race car building, dance party, and a yummy dinner with dessert. Note: There is an additional charge for this event. My family has not attended this event, but it’s on our list for our next visit!

    30 Ways to Enjoy the Woodloch Resort this Fall

    Our visit to Woodloch is easily one of our favorite adventures of 2020. We visited in 2012 and vowed to return when the kids were older and could better enjoy all of the amenities. We finally got our chance this past week and enjoyed a beautiful fall weekend in the Poconos. Established in 1958 by the Kiesendahl family, Woodloch Pines is a resort in the northwest section of the Poconos in Pennsylvania. The 350 acre property has grown over the years to now include a lakeside resort with 160 rooms and suites, times shares and private homes, a championship 18 hole golf course, a luxury spa, and a seemingly infinite amount of ways to have fun.

    A visit to Woodloch focuses on family “togetherness”- most activities encourage families to work together, laugh together, and play together. There is a genuine sense of community that the staff brings to every meal, activity, and celebration. Members of the Kiesendahl family visit with guests at every meal (look out for the crazy patterned suits!). Every staff member we encountered greeted us with a warm welcome, an invitation to join in on the fun, and a sincere desire to be inclusive. We witnessed several, multi generational families vacationing together and overheard so many conversations that started with “Last year, when we did this..” or even better, “When I was your age and we played this game….”. It is clear that many, many families return to Woodloch every year to make memories, and we’re hoping to become one of those families.

    Four East Coast Cities With Nearby Fun

    Large cities like Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, and DC are popular for good reason: There are historical sites dating back hundreds of years, tons of museums and galleries, and a seemingly endless variety of cultural events and ethnic food options. However, many of these large cities cast a bit of a “shadow” on nearby neighbors that can hold their own with visitors! We’ve spent some time over the past couple of years exploring some “smaller” cities within a short drive of well known metropolitans and we wanted to share many places to explore if you find yourself in town with an extra day or weekend.

    Touring the Wang Theatre at Boch Center in Boston

    On a recent trip to Boston (we’ve got dozens of posts featuring popular Boston attractions), we finally had the chance to tour of Boston’s most famous venues: The Wang Theater at the Boch Center.

    The Wang Theater at the Boch Center opened in 1925 as the Metropolitan Theater in the heart of downtown Boston. Over 100 artists came from Italy to complete the painting and sculpture work throughout the theater (look for the lead artist’s, Louis Amorosi, name inscribed in the corner of the ceiling). The fourteen floor building opened as a movie theater with over five thousand seats (the theater routinely oversold tickets and if a patron got up from their seat to use the restroom or buy refreshments, someone quickly took it). The theater stayed open all day for guests to patronize the art exhibits, play games, and socialize.

    15 Ways to Explore the Crane Estate on Castle Hill in Ipswich, Massachusetts

    On a recent visit to the North Shore of Massachusetts, we explored one of the most beautiful Gilded Age estates, the Crane Estate, set high on a hill above one of the most beautiful beaches, Crane Beach, in Ipswich, Massachusetts. The estate has been carefully restored and preserved by the Trustees, who oversee more than 100 properties throughout Massachusetts. 

    The Crane Company, founded by Richard Teller Crane, in 1855 was well known for their brass fixtures and bells, most famously used to help build the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.  Later, his son, Mr. Richard T. Crane, who focused the company on manufacturing various bathroom fixtures, purchased Castle Hill and began renovating and expanding the property. The Cranes, who were based in Chicago, had summer homes in London, England and Jekyll Island, Georgia. The first home on the Ipswich property was built in 1912 but later torn down as it was properly outfitted to withstand the elements of the nearby ocean. The current estate, with 59 rooms, was built in a timeless English style similar to the Cranes’ London estate and finished in 1929. Over the years, the Cranes restored over 3,500 acres in Essex Bay, Choate Island, and Ipswich. The estate also includes the 700 acre Crane Wildlife Refuge, made up of Castle Neck (which borders Crane Beach), five islands, and salt marshes.

    Exploring the CT Trolley Museum and Firetruck Museum in East Windsor, Connecticut

    What is now the Connecticut Trolley Museum first began in 1940 after the Hartford/Springfield rail line that was built in the early 1900s shut down. The rail line was created to bring people to work in the mills in the Rockville area and students back and forth to school. The line lost its popularity as buses became the primary mode of transportation in the area and was torn up in 1926.  In 1940 three men purchased the property and remaining train cars to preserve the history of the area, and as their collection grew, they decided to open a museum. By 1948, the museum staff and technicians started operating cars for the public. Today, the museum is mainly run by enthusiastic and knowledgeable volunteers.

    Great Falls Park in Virginia

    Called the “Niagara of the South” and known as the “Waterway to the West”, Great Falls Park is part of the George Washington Memorial Parkway, which is 32 miles long, encompassing two wildlife refuges and several historic sites and recreational areas over 800 acres. It’s located 12 miles from Washington DC but will transport visitors to a world of outdoor adventures. On the Maryland side is the C&O National Historic Park,  Each year over half a million people explore Great Falls Park.
